Ein Hackaton (Kombination aus "Hacken" und "Marathon") ist eine Veranstaltung, in deren Verlauf kollaborativ an bestehender Software oder anderen Ergebnissen gearbeitet wird. Der erste Hackathon wurde 1999 im Umfeld des Betriebssystems OpenBSD und im Rahmen der JavaONE von Sun durchgeführt. Alternative Bezeichnungen sind "Hack Day", "Hackfest" und "codefest". Im Rahmen von Hackathons können auch Bücher oder Wiki-Inhalte gemeinsam erstellt werden (dann oft auch Book Sprint genannt).
Ablauf
- Einführende Vorträge zum Thema des Hackathons
- Sammlung von Ideen für Projekte (ähnlich den Sessionvorschlägen eines Barcamps)
- Teambildung
- Arbeitsphase (einige Stunden bis mehrere Tage)
- Vorstellung der Ergebnisse durch die Teams
